Birds Of Paradise

Birds Of Paradise

The title and subject of this painting is drawn from the Birds of Paradise plant, or Strelitzia reginae. This particularly fine specimen is found at The Auckland Zoo, New Zealand.

Native to South Africa, the plant is known for its striking foliage, filling the entirety of the canvas, punctuated by beautiful orange flowers that resemble paradise birds. Acrylic on canvas, and painted for the artist’s first solo exhibition in 2012, at NorthArt, Auckland, New Zealand.

This painting is one of two hydrangea paintings created for a 2016 exhibition at Flagstaff Gallery, the other showing the pink variety of the flower.

It was inspired by flowers in the artist’s garden and takes a macro view of the flower, each set of petals becoming a landscape of its own. Higham takes great pride in his garden and has spent much of his life cultivating plants for pleasure. Acrylic on canvas, 2016.

What appears to be an unspoiled forest scene in this painting actually shows a manmade bush grotto called Fernz Fernery. Located adjacent to the Auckland Domain Wintergardens, New Zealand.

It’s a small area filled with native New Zealand bush flora. Bush Walk 2 is one of many bush paintings by the artist, and was a finalist in the Molly Morpeth Canaday Art Award in 2012. Acrylic on canvas.
